UK: Marr’s M2480D working with BYLOR Joint Venture on the construction of the Unit 2 Turbine Hall at Hinkley Point C (HPC) has completed a milestone lift on the project with the successful install of the final of four roof trusses – this one weighing in at 121 tonnes.
The M2480D-led solution provides the capacity to lift in the main roof trusses and the ability to reach all building steelwork from a static position inside the Turbine Hall—meeting the requirements to increase hook availability, improve productivity and reduce site congestion. With a single M2480D installed inside the Unit 2 building, the innovative solution has simplified previous heavy-lifting approaches on the project using multiple tower and crawler cranes.
“Putting the M2480D inside the building means there’s far less disruption to other teams in the vicinity. We previously had to work around the movements of the crawler cranes and during a series of workshops, we identified this solution as one of the biggest things we could improve on, learning from our experiences on Unit 1,” said HPC Project Manager, David Wylie.
“The M2480D solution has freed up space and allowed us to fabricate the 50m wide trusses next to the building and then lift into place by a single crane from a fixed position—eliminating the need to use Big Carl on this critical milestone for the project,” said Nick Horner MCIOB, Head of Construction – Conventional Island & Balance of Plant at EDF.
“The solution we have delivered for BYLOR and EDF on this project is a game changer for the future of how key parts of new nuclear stations can be designed and built,” says Marr’s Managing Director, Simon Marr.
