WESTCONNEX M4-M5 LINK MAIN TUNNEL WORKS

An unconventional cranage solution for a challenging site

PROJECT OVERVIEW

WestConnex is Australia’s biggest integrated transport and urban revitalisation project. A joint project by the Australian Government and NSW State Government, the 33-kilometre predominantly underground motorway scheme includes around 26 kilometres of new tunnels passing underneath Sydney’s Inner West.

Working with ASBJV’s team for 18 months before we were on-site, Marr was engaged early in what was an incredibly complicated project from an engineering point-of-view.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW WE COULD ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROJECT

We work with our clients to find a craneage solution that works – no matter how big or complex the job is.

THE CHALLENGE

The cranage solution needed to address the challenges of:

  • A congested, sloping site
  • Limited space between two arterial roads
  • Proximity to Sydney Airport
  • A challenging schedule
  • Heavy lifting requirements – heavy pre-cast beams weighing up to 84T
  • Limited space for lay down areas

THE RESULT

Marr’s solution using a M2480D installed on a piled cap foundation resulted in:

  • Shortened programme by 25%
  • Cranage solution designed into the site, allowing all heavy lifting requirements to be completed by a single crane from a fixed location.
